Bishop James C. Austin Sr. is the prelate for 5th Illinois Jurisdiction–East and pastor of St. Luke Church of God in Christ in Chicago. He is a dedicated leader, spiritual teacher and uncompromising preacher. His parents – Elder Luke and Addie Austin – raised an honorable man, a holy man – a man of God.

Bishop Austin received God’s call to ministry in 1966 while studying biology and chemistry at his alma mater, the University of Illinois. In 1967, Bishop Austin was ordained an Elder in the Churches of God in Christ by the Founding Bishop of the 5th Jurisdiction of Illinois, Bishop F.G. Green. In 1978, Bishop Green appointed him to the position of Pastor of St. Luke Church of God in Christ. In May 2004, Pastor Austin was elevated to the sacred office of Bishop by the Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ, Bishop Gilbert Earl Patterson.

Bishop James Curtis Austin, Sr. is husband to Missionary Vernesta T. Austin. Together they are the proud parents of James Jr., Dorcas, Prisca and Marcus.
